4 Carol Willis presented the Super Slender Towers around New York’s Central Park Carol Willis is the Director of the Skyscraper Museum in New York and someone passionate about the evolution and the history of the skyscraper. Her museum holds exhibitions on key themes and has a wealth of material about skyscrapers. The focus for Carol’s presentation to the Sydney Skyscraper Summit was the incredible rise of tall thin towers in New York generally located around Central Park with dramatic views over Manhattan. She began her presentation with a spread of 20 of these tall thin towers that she sees as “super slender, luxury towers” in New York. These towers come about because of a lack of constraints on height in New York and a rising value of land. The slenderness ratio on these towers varied from 1:15 to an incredible 1:23 ratio. Penthouses at the top of these slender towers were selling for US$90 million as trophy venues. Some towers have only one apartment per floor. The key projects illustrated here are both designed by SHoP architects for JDS Development Group.
