Tonight’s Budget – a big test of the Albanese Government’s commitment to solving the housing supply and affordability crisis

CEO of the Urban Taskforce, Tom Forrest, said that when it comes to housing, tonight’s Federal Budget would be judged on whether the Albanese Government’s level of commitment to support the States with infrastructures to unlock housing supply across the nation.

There have been some positive signs with last week’s pre-budget announcement of $2 billion for western Sydney roads, but more needs to be done. Tonight’s budget is a real test of the commitment of the Albanese Government to solving the housing supply crisis.

The Commonwealth’s investment in social housing is praiseworthy – but we need support for the private sector who will have to deliver more than 95% of the housing under the National Housing Accord. To date, this has been lacking and the crisis has worsened.
