Sydney property: NSW Government missing new housing targets by 10,000 homes

The NSW government has been accused of hoisting “the white flag” on housing affordability as the number of homes built in Sydney plummets to the lowest level in six years.

The claim comes after the release of the latest housing monitoring data by the NSW Department of Planning, which shows just 29,785 homes were built in Greater Sydney in the 2020-21 financial year. The figure is below the government’s own targets set out in the Housing 2041 report released earlier this year, which states up to 40,000 new homes are needed in Greater ­Sydney every year until 2041.
