The announcement by the NSW Government that $310 million will be allocated to the urban renewal of the Parramatta North precinct will create a new vibrant neighbourhood, says the Urban Taskforce.
“The Parramatta North precinct is a unique opportunity to build on the important heritage of the site to create a vibrant community,” says Urban Taskforce CEO, Chris Johnson. “The site is ideally located close to Parramatta’s centre and to the jobs hub of Westmead Hospital and on the route of the proposed Western Sydney Light Rail.”
“It is good news that the Premier and the Minister for Planning have announced that $310 million will be allocated to the precinct. This will kick start the urban renewal process with its future 2,700 homes and 2,000 jobs on the site.”
“Concerns by some in the community that heritage will be impacted misunderstand the evolutionary nature of how the site has become more urban from the early water mill, the early farm followed by the Female Factory and new buildings by a range of Government Architects from Francis Greenway to James Barnet and to Walter Liberty Vernon.”
“This process of sensitively urbanising the site can continue with quality design and careful attention to landscaping.”
