Newcastle can now connect to the harbour

14 December 2012

The NSW government proposal that the heavy rail will be removed east of Wickham will connect Newcastle city to the harbour and lead to significant urban renewal, says the Urban Taskforce.

Wickham needs to become a new area of development in Newcastle focussed around a transport interchange, says Urban Taskforce CEO Chris Johnson.  We fully support The Newcastle Urban Renewal Strategy which proposes to remove the heavy rail that has separated the city from the harbour for so long.

The urban renewal of Newcastles city will be a boost for the whole region particularly with a revitalisation of the East end, Civic and the West End. Newcastle is a very linear city and it needs a series of hubs like a necklace along the foreshore.

It is excellent that UrbanGrowth NSW will be driving the urban renewal and we encourage them to interact closely with the property and development industry to ensure economic viability of proposals.
