Darling Harbour comes alive

11 December 2012

The dramatic and extensive reworking of Sydneys exhibition and convention facilities will reinvigorate Sydneys Darling Harbour, says the Urban Taskforce.

The winning scheme for Sydneys new entertainment precinct will reconnect Darling Harbour to the city and begin a new wave of development in the precinct, says Urban Taskforce CEO, Chris Johnson. The project delivers far more than exhibition and convention facilities, it stretches into Haymarket, it provides new high rise apartments and hotels that will give Sydney a boost as a regional destination.

The facilities will rival those in Hong Kong and Singapore and reposition Sydney as the events capital of the region.

The use of high rise towers is a demonstration of Sydneys need to continue encouraging height close to the CBD and this sets a precedent for waterfront precincts like Glebe Island.

It will be important to maintain quality design throughout the realisation of the project for the individual buildings as well as for the public domain.

Congratulations to the Lend Lease winning team including their architects for such an inspiring design and commiserations to the other team led by Brookfield Multiplex who would also have delivered an exciting scheme.
