National Housing Supply Council report

10 May 2010

The National Housing Supply Council was established in 2008 to monitor housing demand, supply and affordability in Australia and to highlight current and potential gaps between housing supply and demand from households.

The 2nd State of Supply Report provides projections of underlying demand and land and housing supply over 20 years from 2009 to 2029. The report highlights the increasing gap between housing supply and demand, which is estimated to be a dwelling shortfall of 178,400 as of June 2009.

This gap, between how many homes are supplied and how many are needed, increased by 78,800 dwellings during last financial year and is expected to exceed 300,000 dwellings by 2014.

Planning delays and restrictions and developer charges have again been identified as key impediments to housing supply.
