The discussion paper on Sydney’s Metropolitan Strategy reinforces a 70% split of infill housing with 30% in Greenfield site says the Urban taskforce.
“The discussion paper on Sydney’s Metropolitan Strategy is a good move by the government as it will align planning with transport and infrastructure strategies.” says Urban Taskforce CEO Chris Johnson. “It is good to see that a realistic forecast for around 70% of new dwellings to be in infill sites is included rather than earlier statements of a 50/50 split. “
“It is also good to see a special focus on providing jobs, but with targets of one new job for every new house, it will be the location of jobs that matters. Our transport system is already stretched because houses and jobs are so far apart. The most important task of the new Metropolitan Strategy will be to locate jobs nearer to where people live. This will minimise the cost of new transport infrastructure.”
“Implementation is still a vital part to any strategy for our future. It is good to see that the Minister says a clear mechanism to ensure the strategy is properly delivered, will be developed. “
“To lead on the realisation of the planning targets, particularly in infill sites, a strong Urban Renewal Authority will be needed.
“The development industry needs clarity to enable projects to proceed and the Metropolitan Strategy as it develops can do this. It is important that clear targets are handed down to individual councils otherwise the wider metropolitan targets will never occur.
