Joint transport committee is a model for all urban areas in NSW

7 March 2012

The Urban Taskforce believes that the joint state/local government transport committee announced by Premier OFarrell is a model that can be replicated in urban areas across the state.

The Joint Regional Planning Panels are successfully operating as a joint state/local government planning body and this could easily be extended to Joint Regional Transport Panels operating across 10 or so councils. said Urban Taskforce CEO Chris Johnson.

In our submission to the local government review, Destination 2036, the Urban Taskforce suggested a series of joint regional panels to ensure state leadership with local involvement. Joint panels are appropriate for areas that require a regional perspective including planning, transport, economic growth and housing. said Chris Johnson.

The Central Sydney Planning Committee has been a successful model for combining state and local interests and it can be replicated in other areas.

The prosperity of the state cannot be delegated to local governments who are focussed mainly on their local voters. It is essential that a bigger picture and long term approach is taken in planning and managing the growth of the state and joint governance led by the state and involving local government is a good model.

The Urban Taskforce is a property development industry group, representing Australias most prominent property developers and equity financiers.
