The announcement by the NSW Government that it will financially help fast growing, small-to-medium gazelle companies along with other jobs support is a welcome initiative, says the Urban Taskforce.
“The initiatives in the Jobs for the Future report are important in acknowledging the rapidly changing nature of employment in Australia,” says Urban Taskforce CEO, Chris Johnson. “The focus on small fast growing companies, called gazelles, is a response to the growth in innovative, technically savvy start-up companies.”
“The $50 million loan guarantee program and the $3.5 million direct loan pilot program should help these new job opportunities grow.”
“The area around the proposed Western Sydney Airport, which Assistant Cities Minister, Angus Taylor sees as Sydney’s third city after Parramatta and the traditional Sydney CBD is where many new jobs will be located in the future. It is important that all levels of government focus on job creation around the future airport.”
“The provision of necessary infrastructure will be essential in getting real investment into major employment enterprises in Western Sydney and the new airport is the best facilitator of this infrastructure.”
“The NSW Government is also supporting start-up companies through a $10 million fund with the expectation that they will develop momentum to become gazelle companies in the future.”
“Start-up companies usually need lower rents with adequate infrastructure and so focusing on greenfield land near the Western Sydney airport will assist new companies set up in a big metropolis like Sydney.”
“The development of a robust land use planning strategy around the airport, including input from key stakeholders such as property owners and the development industry, is vital to ensuring these future jobs can and will be created.”
“A future City Deal to coordinate the development of the land around the Western Sydney Airport would also help facilitate jobs and employment growth in this strategically important area.”
