Greens attempt to overturn vital regulation thwarted

01 November 2010

An attempt by the NSW Greens to overturn key provisions of a new regulation on Aboriginal heritage has been blocked, following approaches made by the Urban Taskforce to the NSW Opposition and the cross-benchers.

If the Greens has been successful, it would have been necessary to carry a “due diligence assessment” for the most minor of works on land. It would have also been much easier for Aboriginal heritage impact permits to be struck down as invalid. Thankfully, all the parties and independents, other than the Greens, yesterday voted to uphold the regulation.

Our submission explaining the issue in further detail is available here.
