Coles Port Macquarie Supermarket Wins National Award

27th July 2012

The 2012 Urban Taskforce Australia Development Excellence Award for Retail Development has been won by the Coles supermarket in Port Macquarie.

“Even in difficult economic times there are excellent developments occurring around Australia,” says Urban Taskforce CEO Chris Johnson. “Our jury, under the chairmanship of Government Architect Peter Poulet, found that many excellent projects were entered in the awards this year and they have come up with some quality projects as winners.”

The Coles supermarket in Gordon Street Port Macquarie impressed the judges with its art deco external appearance. The curved facades give the building a nautical character which is very appropriate for Port Macquarie, said Urban Taskforce CEO Chris Johnson.

The development is seen as a positive catalyst to economic growth in the town as it is significantly bigger than the old store which has now been fitted out for three new retailers to Port Macquarie.

On the environmental front significant energy is saved through the adoption of a hybrid gas refrigeration and air conditioning system which is now being adopted in all new Coles developments. Significant glazing to the street maximises the use of natural light.

The project included the relocation of the Port Macquarie Bus Terminal by Coles with the support of Council.

The Urban Taskforce awards are for design, environmental and financial success and it is pleasing to see that the Coles supermarket has increased its trading performance by 40% over the previous store.
