Bays Precinct renewal summit can lift Sydney as a global city

17 July 2014

The Urban Taskforce has welcomed the announcement by the NSW Government that an international summit of urban renewal experts will be held to revitalise Sydney’s Bays Precinct.

“The underutilised land around this part of the harbour must contribute a more positive image of Sydney and add mixed uses including residential, commercial, cultural and retail facilities. This is the next big waterfront site following Barangaroo and we need to think boldly so that it adds to the global standing of Sydney as a dynamic city that supports jobs and urban living.”

“The Bays Precinct has been struggling for many years and it is a credit to UrbanGrowth NSW that a way forward is now occurring. An international urban renewal summit will open up a range of options that stakeholders can respond to.”

“While international experts are a good way to begin a project we also need to build in local experts who understand the climate and character of Sydney Harbour.”

“It is good to see the Baird Government taking a lead role in driving urban renewal for Sydney. It is ultimately the state government that must be responsible for managing the extra 1.6 million people coming to Sydney in the next 20 years and the international summit can lead to some new and creative thinking for the benefit of Sydney and NSW.”
