8 SINGAPORE & KUALA LUMPUR Rahul Mittal, Design Director of Cistri Singapore, presented the urban evolution of Singapore as well as a project in Kuala Lumpur. Rahul gave an up beat view of Singapore with its ranking as the number one city for best infrastructure and its number one ranking as the top Asian city in the Quality of Living index. He also explained how Singapore was similar to Sydney with a population of 5 million people but with a density 20 times bigger. The commitment to a MRT and a LRT system has moved commuters onto public transport and this has led to new housing being located next to rail stations. And Singapore is now doubling its rail network and focussing on the creation of walkable spaces and a cycling network. Rahul then presented a number of new residential and mixed use developments around rail stations including Kampung Admirality which included housing for the elderly, a childcare centre, medical centre, a supermarket and 104 apartments. The project was designed by Singapore architects WOHA and the building incorporates significant roof gardens. Rahul also presented a Malaysian Transport Oriented Development project in Kuala Lumpur called “Eco RiverCity” which is located along the “River of Life” project that proposed to transform 10.7 kilometres of decaying riverfront into a vibrant and thriving waterfront. With a series of before and after images Rahul demonstrated how dramatic change could occur to these currently unloved river banks. The presentation demonstrated the incredible urban renewal possibilities in Asian cities particularly when new public transport networks were undertaken.
