Urban Ideas- Innovative Apartments

With a state election due in March 2019 it seems that many local politicians are trying
to attract votes by raising concerns about what they term “over development”. The
electorates of Ryde and Macquarie Fields have local members and candidates calling
for a stop to the amount of development that has occurred in recent years. Mayors
from North Sydney, Northern Beaches, Canterbury Bankstown and Ryde are also out
calling for an end to what they see as excessive development. Part of the concerns
about the new forms of development is that they are all looking too similar.
Journalist Andrew Taylor wrote on 30 June 2018 “Apartment developments across
Sydney, from inner-city Darling Square to suburban Kogarah, Canterbury Road and Dee
Why look strikingly similar.” This issue of Urban Ideas opens up a discussion on the
design and appearance of apartment buildings in Sydney. To compare Sydney designs
with other cities we look at international examples of apartment design and look in
particular at Melbourne apartment buildings which have a reputation for innovative
design. This issue also examines a range of Sydney apartments that do have a more
innovative appearance.
