The return of the Turnbull government gives the opportunity to refocus on Australian cities, jobs and housing affordability particularly in Western Sydney says the Urban Taskforce.
“The Urban Taskforce Australia congratulates Malcolm Turnbull of being returned to government in the recent election and looks forward to strong policies on urban issues.” Says Urban Taskforce CEO Chris Johnson “Both the government and the opposition made commitments to focussing on cities and we are looking forward to a political consensus on driving quality development and growth in Australia’s cities.”
“The proposals for ‘City Deals’ where the three levels of government work together on large precincts like Western Sydney around the proposed airport now need to become real. The Urban Taskforce strongly supports the government’s focus on Western Sydney and believes the private sector must also be involved in the development of robust plans for the future of this key area.”
“The affordability of housing, particularly in urban areas like Sydney, must also be the focus of the federal government, particularly through funding key projects. Negative gearing arrangements must not be changed so that the investment market into rental housing can continue with confidence.”
“The most important area that the federal government can help cities with is the funding of vital infrastructure. As urban populations increase with inevitably higher densities the need for metro rail networks will become essential to maintain urban liveability and the quality of life enjoyed by residents. The Sydney Metro is an excellent example but a more extensive network will be required over future decades.”
“The Urban Taskforce is keen to work with the federal government as policies are developed on areas that affect the property industry.”
