Sydney’s New Residential Hot Spot- Housing Density along Light Rail Route to La Perouse

The NSW Government’s proposed light rail along Anzac Parade should be extended to La Perouse and loop back via Eastgardens, says the Urban Taskforce.

“Historically trams ran along Anzac Parade all the way to La Perouse and this should be reinstated as an extension of the current light rail route from the city to Kensington,” says urban Taskforce CEO, Chris Johnson. “The light rail should loop back through Matraville and Eastgardens to Maroubra.”

“Along this route new housing must be developed in the form of 6 to 8 storey apartments with shops in the ground floor. At town centres taller buildings up to 20 storeys high could reinforce the activity in these centres.”

“The Maroubra- La Perouse peninsular is underdeveloped yet it is close to the jobs in the city, the airport and the port. It is next to some of the best beaches in the world and there are significant parklands.”

“The area around Eastgardens shopping centre is an apartment hot spot and linking this precinct with the light rail will add to the amenity of future residents.”

“The Urban Taskforce believes there must be a strong relationship between infrastructure and housing density. There are many precincts in Sydney where the combination of new public transport infrastructure and apartment living can help house the city’s growing population while providing more retail, more amenities and improved public transport for existing and new communities.”
