Steve McCann, the Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Lend Lease, has been announced as the Property Person of the Year for 2013 by the Urban Taskforce Australia.
The Urban Taskforce is a non-profit organisation representing Australia’s most prominent property developers and equity financiers. The Property Person of the Year is an annual award and in its 11 year. Steve joins a distinguished list of winners including last year’s winner Ross McDiven of Brookfield Multiplex and previous winners Harry Triguboff, Lang Walker, Bill Moss and Gary Rothwell.
Commenting on Steve’s award, Urban Taskforce Chair Noel Hemmings QC said: “Steve McCann has led Lend Lease into a buoyant period over the last 8 years. In Sydney, Lend Lease is driving the two biggest urban regeneration projects; Barangaroo South and the Sydney International Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment Precinct (SICEEP) project, which will transform the Western edge of the city.”
Steve McCann is responsible for the overall management of the Lend Lease Group operations across Australia, Asia, Europe and America. Lend Lease is listed on the ASX, has a market capitalisation of $5.8 billion and employs more than 16,500 people globally. The Lend Lease Group now has a development pipeline with an expected end value of $37 billion, the largest in Lend Lease’s 50 year history, and a construction backlog of over $16 billion.
Urban Taskforce CEO Chris Johnson said: “Under Steve’s leadership, Lend Lease has secured many major projects in Australia like Barangaroo and SICEEP in Sydney, the RNA Showgrounds in Brisbane, Batman’s Hill in Melbourne, the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in Queensland and Waterbank in Perth. Through the acquisition of Valemus in 2011, Lend Lease has also become a leading player in the infrastructure and civil engineering markets in Australia.”
“Internationally, Lend Lease projects include the £1.5 billion regeneration of Elephant & Castle in London, the second stage of the Stratford redevelopment, the International Quarter, which follows the very successful delivery of the Athletes’ Village for the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Jem® mixed use development and the Somerset retail development in Singapore and Setia City Mall in Malaysia. Lend Lease is also now the largest manager of privatised military housing and lodging and the largest high rise residential builder in America.”
“For an Australian company to have developed such a strong global presence while still taking a lead role in Australia is remarkable. Steve has maintained Lend Lease’s position internationally as a leading sustainable company and Lend Lease is targeting the first major carbon positive precinct at Barangaroo. At the same time Lend Lease’s relentless focus on safety has driven significant innovation and improvement in industry practices in a number of markets in which Lend Lease operates,” said Chris Johnson.
Commenting on this announcement, Steve McCann said: “I am very humbled to receive this award. It is a great privilege to be recognised in the industry and an honour to be included in the company of such notable previous award winners. I am proud to lead a great Australian company. Lend Lease is a values driven company and our vision to create the best places means we are always focused on leaving positive legacies. Our people are our greatest asset and I am fortunate to be a part of a fantastic team.”
Steve will be awarded the Property Person of the Year at a charity lunch on the 11th December. The Urban Taskforce has raised over $1.7 million for Warrah Homes and St Vincents Prostrate Cancer Research over the last 10 years through the Property Person of the Year lunch.
