Simple solutions for Renters and for Landlords needed from National Cabinet

Urban Taskforce CEO calls on the National Cabinet to find simple solutions for landlords and for renters in both the commercial and residential rental markets.

It is simply not possible for landlords and renters to “negotiate” a solution. This ignores the role of real estate agents and the details of often highly complicated loan and financing documents, let alone the attitude of the banks.

Landlord tenant relationships are often complicated and unless all the parties are aligned, simply asking those involved to “negotiate” is not a practical solution.

Urban Taskforce proffers this simple solution which builds upon the excellent work done in the development of packages for those out of work (Job-Seeker package) – and also for small and medium businesses to -assist in keeping people in work (JobKeeper package).

The same philosophy should apply to tenants and landlords.

If a residential tenant registered as being the beneficiary of the Job Keeper (through their employer) or Job Seeker benefit, their landlord to get up to $500pw rent for the next 6 months.

Where small business tenants have been shut due to COVID-19 restrictions, Landlord gets $1,000 pw.

The detail of the amounts proposed can be debated. The point is that the system must be simple and consistent in its application to other well thought-through initiatives.
