School kids tell developers how to design apartments

02 October 2015

20 school children will build their vision of apartment living in cardboard this Sunday morning, says the Urban Taskforce.

“The Urban Taskforce is sponsoring an innovative project where 20 school children aged between 8 and 12 will design and build apartments in cardboard,” says Chris Johnson, CEO of the Urban Taskforce. “Due to the growing trends towards higher-density, urbanised living, many of these kids will live in apartments in the future, so this is a great opportunity to get their input into what would make apartments an exciting and fun living space for them.’’

“The cardboard structures will be built from 10am to noon this coming Sunday, 04 October on the glass floor over the city model at Customs House. The project will be highly visual and ideal for television coverage with potential interviews with the young designers and developer representative Chris Johnson.”

“The cardboard apartment structures will be higher than the school children. The innovative apartment designs are part of the Sydney Architecture Festival which aims to raise greater awareness of the importance of good design.”

“I am expecting the future generation of apartment dwellers to question the need for walls and separate rooms in the technology driven apartment of the future,” says Chris Johnson. “I think we may see an interest in aerial gardens and even more communal ways of living with shared kitchens. Study areas and even work stations may become parts of future urban living which could eliminate totally the need to travel to work.”

“I suspect the 20 school children will have some radical ideas for apartment design that the development industry have not even thought of.”

“Four architects and designers, Marcus Trimble, Antoinette Trimble, Sam Marshall and Liane Rossler will work with the school students to stimulate new ideas and help with the physical construction.”
