Queanbeyan Housing Approval Good for NSW

06 November 2012

The recent approval by Minister Brad Hazzard to rezone land in Tralee near Queanbeyan is good for the supply of housing in NSW, says the Urban Taskforce CEO Chris Johnson.

The Tralee rezoning was delayed by a strange move by the Federal Government to change the way that aircraft noise is measured around airports, says the Urban Taskforce.

The Federal Governments proposed changes to noise measurement systems for airports, if accepted, would have blocked development in Tralee and many other parts of Sydney.

Finally the State Government should be congratulated for seeing sense. It has accepted that if appropriately located and designed, residential development can occur in the vicinity of airports.

Development in Tralee will incorporate additional controls to ensure that future residents are protected from airport operations.  In fact, these controls will guarantee that Canberra airport will be free to expand and continue operation without the imposition of a curfew.

We are pleased to see that the Minister has made a balanced decision that approves new housing while protecting Canberra Airport.
