Population projections require a planning system that supports growth

28 November 2013

The recent release by the Australian Bureau of Statistics of projections that Australia’s population will double by 2075 will need pro-growth planning systems particularly in NSW, says the Urban Taskforce.
“Just as the NSW Parliament waters down proposed planning reforms the projections for growth are going up,” says Urban Taskforce CEO, Chris Johnson.  “In 2053 projections show that Sydney will cease to be the largest city in Australia and without support for growth, this could occur even earlier.”
“With a current housing shortfall of over 10,000 a year and a planning system that is becoming anti-growth it is likely that Melbourne will become the number one city in Australia around 2040.”
“The Urban Taskforce is concerned that 20,000 people each year leave NSW to head to Queensland and Victoria mostly due to the lack of housing supply. Clearly NSW is not seen by these people as being number one.”
“The language from the Greens that planning reforms are pro developer and therefore anti community is a heads in the sand approach to how we will all handle the inevitable growth that the ABS say is coming.
“The ABS data demonstrates that the number of people over 65 will double by 2040 and these older Australian’s will need places to live.
“Governments must take leadership roles in managing future growth rather than delegating this to community groups who prefer the status quo.
