The announcement by the Minister for Local Government, Paul Toole that Rockdale and Botany Bay councils will be amalgamated into the Bayside Council opens the potential for more growth around Botany Bay, says the Urban Taskforce.
“The land fronting Botany Bay is ideal for the development of urban living close to the waterfront as well as to the jobs in the Sydney CBD,” says Urban Taskforce CEO, Chris Johnson. “We believe that the new Bayside Council has an opportunity to plan more density around the bay to accommodate our growing population.”
“Last year the Urban Taskforce proposed mid- rise buildings around the bay that reflected the character of the French Riviera. This reflects the aspirations behind the establishment of Brighton-Le-Sands as a resort town in the 1880s.” See the Urban Taskforce image of future bayside development below:
“The new council should also look at extending the light rail along Anzac Parade to La Perouse and serving the extensive new development at Pagewood.”
“The Greater Sydney Commission and the NSW Government will now need to resolve which of Sydney’s 6 districts the Bayside Council is part of. Currently Rockdale is in the Southern District and Botany Bay is in the Central District.
“It is good to see the Minister for Local Government driving reform in Local Government and the Urban Taskforce looks forward to increased efficiencies once the amalgamation process has been completed. We are however concerned that during the restructuring process the focus on the planning system could be diminished and the Department of Planning and the Greater Sydney Commission may need to take a stronger role during the transition phase.”
