Metro funding fills the gaps for Western Sydney growth
CEO of the Urban Taskforce Australia, Tom Forrest, said today that the announcement that the Albanese Government would fund $1 billion for new Metro corridors “was both smart and strategic – providing investor certainty for housing and employment growth as well as for the broader community in Sydney’s West.”
“Today’s announcement gives the clearest signal to the property development sector of how the future of Western Sydney will grow – for the first time connected by world class metros.
“The earlier the Government sets these corridors in stone, the better for everyone.
“Urban Taskforce has been calling on the Commonwealth to roll up its sleeves when it comes to housing and job enabling infrastructure funding – particularly when it comes to the Western Sydney airport. They are starting to build a solid framework:
- $2 billion for western Sydney Roads in the 2024 Federal Budget
- $1 billion for Fifteenth Ave announced in January 2025
- $1 billion for Water Infrastructure projects also announced in January 2025
“Today’s further $1 billion investment in Metro corridors builds on these recent funding announcements. The Albanese Government was slow to come to the Western Sydney growth party – but today’s announcement shows they’re now at the DJ desk spinning tracks.
“The announcement also foreshadows connecting the Western Sydney Airport through to St Marys and into the existing North West Metro at Tallawong.
“To key to unlocking housing supply in Sydney’s South West is a road or public transport link to South Macarthur. That would immediately fast-track over 22,000 homes in an area that has already been re-zoned for housing.
“Locking down key infrastructure corridors is the key to smart planning for growth. This was a missing feature of the now abolished Greater Sydney Commission experiment, and it is good to see the mistakes of the past are not being repeated.
“Urban Taskforce calls on the Federal Opposition to match or expand on today’s funding commitment to show bi-partisan support for the growth of Western Sydney.”
