Urban Taskforce Chief Executive, Tom Forrest, today called on the NSW Government to remove the Metropolitan Rural Areas (MRA) planning controls from the new Region Plan.
Urban Taskforce members have given clear advice to us that the MRA is not fit for purpose. It should be removed from the Region Plan. There needs to be an urgent reconsideration of the MRA in the context of the development of the new Region and District Plans, along with a review of the principles underpinning it.
The MRA – Objective 29 in the 2018 Metropolis of three cities Region Plan – has effectively added an additional strategic planning barrier to housing supply on Sydney’s fringe.
The current provisions simply state that urban development is not consistent with “the values” of MLA.
