MEDIA RELEASE: The next Premier must address the housing supply crisis as ABS data shows NSW building approvals falling off a cliff

Urban Taskforce CEO, Tom Forrest, today said that fixing the housing supply crisis in NSW must be the first priority of the Premier of NSW after the election on March 25.

Today’s ABS data shows that building approvals in NSW had collapsed in the month of January to only half that of the previous month.

The ABS today reported that NSW building approvals in January 2023 had collapsed by 49% from the previous month.  The drop was greatest in the multi-unit dwellings category, down to a meagre 844 approvals – less than half of what was approved the same time last year (when NSW was in the middle of the Omicron outbreak).
