Media Release | Building Bill is a welcome blow to ambulance-chasing lawyers | 05.08.26

Acting Urban Taskforce Australia CEO, Paul Waterhouse, welcomed the passing of the Building (Approvals and Practitioners) Bill 2026 as an important step to resolving issues surrounding building defects rectification.

The long-awaited Bill – approved yesterday by the NSW Parliament – is a blow to ambulance-chasing lawyers, who profit from building defects at the expense of developers, builders, insurers, and building owners alike.

The regulatory framework introduced by the Bill creates a head of power for the Building Commission to establish a building defect dispute mediation/resolution service.  This will require developers and bodies corporate to negotiate over any building defects before any court action can be taken.
