Major cities agency can make a real difference

30 April 2008

Australias property developers today welcomed the Federal Governments decision to establish a high-level Major Cities Unit.

The Urban Taskforces chief executive, Aaron Gadiel, said the move suggested that government was genuine in its commitment to improving our urban environments.

This is a welcome move by the Commonwealth to support our nations cities, and encourage urban development, Mr Gadiel said.

Industry and the community have being crying out for a more coordinated policy approach to the metropolitan areas.

The Federal Government will now be armed with two key agencies the Major Cities Unit and Infrastructure Australia.

This offers a new hope that we will finally have real federal-state co-operation on transport and other key infrastructure.

We also welcome the recognition of Newcastle and the Gold Coast as major cities.

The Urban Taskforce is a property development industry group, representing Australias most prominent property developers and equity financiers.

The NSW development industrys annual turnover is $35 billion and employs 180,000 people, accounting for six percent of the States total employment. It is the fifth largest contributor to the State economy.
