I write in relation to the Housing for All discussion paper, which Council has placed on exhibition. Housing for All lays out the City of Sydney’s approach to housing supply and affordability, with a particular focus on low- to medium-income earners.
In supporting papers, and in the discussion paper itself, the City argues that it has been very effective in meeting its housing needs – “Where and how can we plan for more homes after we have done so much?” – and appears to place most of the blame for failures to deliver onto the NSW Government.
In applying criticism, Urban Taskforce members have expressed concern that the Paper appears to be hyper-critical of the Housing Delivery Authority (HDA), and so called “ad-hoc rezonings”, arguing that it is best placed to determine local housing needs and has “repeatedly” demonstrated its effectiveness in meeting housing needs.
In the view of Urban Taskforce, the Paper does not properly consider the significant contribution of the City of Sydney Council itself in creating the under-supply of dwellings in the LGA.
