The announcement by the NSW Government that Danish architects have been appointed to design a new expanded Fish Market will create a new waterfront destination, says the Urban Taskforce.
“The few concept images released of the Danish architect’s 3XN approach to the new Fish Market look very exciting,” says Urban Taskforce CEO, Chris Johnson. “The connections between Denmark and Sydney that began with Joern Utzon’s Opera House design are clearly growing with the involvement of 3XN, headed by Kim Nielsen, who are also designing AMP’s major tower at Circular Quay.”
“Local architects BVN are part of the Fish Market team and this will balance international and local knowledge.”
“The current Fish Market site will be redeveloped with new housing and presumably supporting retail uses. All harbour front development in inner Sydney has a duty to create a public realm with promenades and outdoor eating venues that stimulate the local and visitor economies. The new Fish Market site with its north facing outlook has a major opportunity to become a much visited destination.”
“The Urban Taskforce while supporting the project is concerned about vehicle access to the site. The current markets already have significant vehicle access problems and the new site would appear to have a similar problem. It will be important to resolve this access issue as planning develops.”
