Enfield Approval Good News for Sydney

06 September 2007

The decision by the NSW Minister for Planning, Frank Sartor, to approve the Enfield Intermodal Terminal is good news for Sydney, according to Aaron Gadiel, Chief Executive Officer of the NSW Urban Taskforce.

Container trade through Sydney is set to grow between five and seven per cent a year for 20 years, Mr Gadiel said. This approval shows that the NSW Government is serious about providing the infrastructure to accommodate this growth.

The approved development will include an intermodal terminal, railway lines, sidings and associated works, warehousing, container storage areas, a light industrial-commercial area and onsite works.

Eighty-five per cent of containers originate from or are destined for a destination within 40 kilometres of Port Botany, making this site ideal for an intermodal terminal. Freight operators can expect reduced delivery times and costs.

Sydneysiders can expect 510 ongoing jobs and an injection of $150 million into the economy.

Idle industrial land at Enfield will once again serve an important economic purpose.

Whats more 300 truck movements will be eliminated from Sydneys road arteries.

Paper, electronics, food, metal products and furniture can be more easily transported.

Likely destinations for goods handled by the new intermodal terminal include the Chullora Technology Park, Flemington Markets, Bankstown Airport, Yennora Distribution Park, Sefton Industrial Precinct, Villawood Industrial Estate, Lidcombe Business Park, Silverwater Industrial Estate, Liverpool and Morebank Industrial Areas and the Clyde Industrial Area all are within 12 kilometres of Enfield.

The NSW Urban Taskforce is a property development industry group, representing NSWs most prominent and important developers, builders and property financiers. The NSW development industrys annual turnover is $35 billion and employs 180,000 people, accounting for six percent of the States total employment. It is the fifth largest contributor to the State economy.
