The developers’ lobby group has backed mandatory quotas for affordable housing in new building projects as long as they come with incentives such as bonus floor space or relaxed design rules – but local councils will not support any erasure of their planning powers.
Urban Taskforce chief executive Tom Forrest pointed to South Australia, where laws mandate that significant developments in large swaths of Adelaide must contain at least 15 per cent affordable housing.
