Code changes good for the NSW economy

22 October 2012

The Minister for Planning and Infrastructures recent announcement about streamlined planning codes will boost construction, says the Urban Taskforce.

Brad Hazzards commitment to code based planning is clearly demonstrated by his recent announcements about expanding codes to include larger industrial buildings and changes to existing shops. says Urban Taskforce CEO Chris Johnson The Minister is clearly demonstrating leadership in cutting red tape to fast track approvals.

With NSW construction activity still running at half the per capita level of Victoria, the more red tape that can be cut the better to help our construction industry.

The principle behind code based assessment is that, where the planning system has already determined the general bulk and form for buildings in a particular precinct then proposals that comply with these codes should receive reasonably fast approvals rather than opening up a new debate about the rules.

With the governments proposals to increase the involvement of communities in setting the rules through the strategic planning phase, we should see more building types able to be code assessed.
