Barangaroo South Concept sets the Agenda for a Taller Global City for Sydney

The revised concept plan for Barangaroo South will add new high quality buildings to this exciting new urban precinct for Sydney, says the Urban Taskforce.

“World class cities keep growing as their economies improve and Barangaroo South is a clear statement that Sydney is growing and that our economic performance is improving,” says Urban Taskforce CEO, Chris Johnson. “The latest step in the Barangaroo story to submit the concept plan for the three high rise residential towers designed by Renzo Piano, the landmark hotel designed by Wilkinson Eyre and the associated urban spaces, is a demonstration of the project’s confidence.”

“Clearly the world’s best architects are contributing to this important project with Pritzker Prize winners Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano crafting elegant buildings and Chris Wilkinson from London designing the Crown Sydney Hotel Resort. Many local Sydney architects are also involved in the Barangaroo South project including Collins and Turner, Durbach Block Jaggers, Bates Smart, PTW, FJMT, Tzannes Architects and others.”

“The scale of Barangaroo South should be a catalyst for a new wave of taller buildings across the Sydney CBD as Sydney continues to grow as an economic centre in the Asia Pacific region. Over recent decades the height of Sydney’s towers has been constrained by planning rules but the dynamic forms of Barangaroo’s towers sets a challenge back to the rest of the city to continue to grow.”

“The Sydney CBD has a much smaller footprint that other Australian cities so to retain its number one status it has to grow vertically. With design excellence and the use of modern technologies tall buildings can give great value to cities.”

“Clearly the ground level around tall buildings must respond to the scale of people and to solar access and wind issues. The latest concept plan proposal for Barangaroo South has addressed these issues very well.”
