The line is now beingextended with two additional lines and Ofer is also driving a new city gateway project thatintegrates a number of public transport systems with significant new high rise development.Jerusalem city covers 126 square kilometres with metropolitan population of 1,255,000.The ancient city is a very small component of the overall city. The initial red line of the light rail was 13.8 kilometres long with 33 stations and this is currently being followed by the stage 2 green line with a similar length. While the construction phase caused some inconvenience, the final operating line has fitted comfortably into the urban fabric. Ofer has been developing urban design principles for new developments along the light rail route that ensured active uses on the ground floor. This led to 8 storey new buildings that defined the street edges. In order to extend the catchment areas around stations, Ofer is considering installing vertical people mover mechanisms in key locations along the routes. Ofer also presented the City Gateway project that brought together a number of light rail linesalong with heavy rail and bus networks. Around this transportation hub, Ofer developed a plan for a number of high-rise, mixed-use buildings where workers or residents could walk to thetransport interchange.PROPOSED CITY GATEWAY PROJECT CITY GATEWAY16'
