6 INNOVATIVE APARTMENTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD BY MVRDV www.mvrdv.nl The Dutch architectural firm MVRDV has become a leader globally in rethinking design and using innovation to create buildings and urban environments that are much more interesting when viewed by the public. The design leader, Winy Maas, has visited Sydney a number of times and in discussion with the Urban Taskforce CEO, Chris Johnson, he expressed support for the design of apartments that demonstrated innovation and even ‘quirky’ approaches. The design of MVRDV’s apartments for the aged W030C0 has cantilevered balconies that give the building a dynamic quality. Their incredible market building in Rotterdam curves an apartment building over an outdoor market place to give it shelter and then encloses the market by completing the curve. Amazingly the building is mainly apartments but the built form becomes an enclosure for a bustling market place. MVRDV has also designed apartments that sit in water, are covered in green landscape, or build forms like shipping containers. Every project has set out to create design excellence through innovation.
