The apartment construction boom in cities has seen 11 of the 17 awards announced at the Urban Taskforce Development Excellence Awards going to apartment buildings. Leading the charge is the dramatic York & George apartment tower in Sydney’s George Street developed by Fife Capital with its 32-storey building sitting on a seven-storey podium with mainly commercial uses including offices for Optus, Vodafone andWeWork.
The construction was difficult because there were active railway lines below, the light rail was being constructed in George Street and heritage buildings required protection. The apartment tower’s elegant weave pattern was seen by the jury as adding interest.
